5G technology, which features “high-speed,” “low-latency” and “wide-link” capabilities, is expected to bring smart manufacturing, smart medical care, smart retail, Internet of Things (IoT), Internet of Vehicles (IoV), and even smart cities, and bring more convenience into people’s lives. The development of 5G is expected to tremendously benefit humanity as many countries worldwide continue to strive to introduce 5G services.

Taiwan’s 5G spectrum auctions have even surpassed 138 billion NT dollars (about 4.586 billion US dollars), showing the importance of 5G in the evolution of mobile communications. The domestic demand and capacity resumption with the China local market will be affected by the current outbreak of the Novel Coronavirus (COVID-19). However, if the epidemic is brought under control in the first half of 2020, a rebound in the second half can be expected due to deferred demand and booming 5G applications.

The year 2020 was expected to be a year that will experience an explosive 5G growth by a wave of phone replacements from the consumers’ end. As coverage rate increases and integrates Artificial Intelligence (AI), cloud platforms and edge computing, it will be widely used in fields such as manufacturing, medical treatment, and transportation, creating many new business opportunities. The sales in electronic products from China takes up to 25% of the world market including mobile phones, computers, and televisions. The demand and supply have been impacted shortly as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic; however, 5G is still an inevitable element in the development of mobile communications. Once the spread of the virus is controlled, the promising 5G and Artificial Intelligence of Things (AIoT) developments will rebound strongly.

Taiwan’s advantage comes from a solid foundation of its semiconductor and ICT industries. Semiconductor wafer foundry from Taiwan takes the lead in the world with advanced high-end processes. With production capacity mainly operating in Taiwan, the impact from the epidemic has been cushioned by its high factory automation efficiency. Since the fast transmission speed of 5G is limited to short-distance transmission and the necessity to cooperate with various fields, a great demand for customizable and diverse small cells manufacturing has greatly increased. The Taiwan ICT industry, with its professional expertise, experience, and flexible manufacturing ability, is at full throttle to assist Taiwan enterprises breaking into the 5G market.

Taiwan Excellence’s award-winning brand, Edge-Core, has developed a big data backhaul technology to reduce design and deployment costs by referencing future 5G market demand to drive a new generation of mobile network services. The 5G wireless router developed by D-Link Technology can establish a large-scale mesh network, which allows users to easily connect various IoT and smart home devices. Zyxel’s intelligent information security defense and parental control wireless router combines speedy performance, information security, parental control, and other features, making it the perfect gatekeeper for home networks.
